10 Tips to Prevent Ageing

Preventing premature ageing and looking totally amazing at 60 – totally possible. And when’s the best time to start? Like, in your 20s – however, not all is lost if you’re in your 30s, 40s, 50s +. Any time is a good time to prevent ageing.

1. Protect yourself from the sun

Always wear a broad spectrum high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) sunscreen. Protecting our skin from the sun will ensure that our skin is not weakened by environmental factors influenced by the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

2. Strengthen your skin cells

Try to strengthen your skin through hydrating products – think hydrating moisturisers, hydrating masks and serums! Make them all part of your skin care routine. Avoid products that are designed for oily skins – as they will dry out and weaken already sensitised skins. Increase water intake and eat nutrient dense foods so that our skin cells are kept well hydrated, nourished and strengthened.

3. Don’t forget to exfoliate

Exfoliation helps encourage the production of new, baby skin cells. Exfoliation removes, old, dehydrated and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. By removing old skin cells, the products we use on our skin have a better chance of reaching into the deeper layers of the skin – making them more effective. Exfoliating can also make your skin look brighter and lighter.

4. Invest in a silicone face mask

Silicone masks are becoming more accessible. Silicone increases hydration of the stratum corneum (surface of the skin), facilitating regulation of fibroblast and collagen production – ie: great things for your skin.

5. Schedule a regular facial

Massage can help stimulate the skin, remove toxins from the lymphatic system, improve circulation and aid with product penetration – these are all positives for our skin that help keep our skin in good health.
6. Incorporate some more advanced treatments into your skincare routine

Schedule some microdermabrasion, glycolic and LASER or IPL sessions to help with skin rejuvenation. Alternating between these types of treatments throughout the year will take away years from your skin down the track and help prevent ageing.

7. Reduce stress

If you believe that stress is contributing to your skin condition, try attacking the stress from all angles – identify the source and try to eliminate or minimise its impact; drink calming teas like lavender and chamomile, sprinkle some lavender essential oil in your work space, bedroom and living areas. Incorporate some yoga or relaxation rituals into your day including 10 mins to wind-down from work or other stressful situations. I like listening to guided meditations that are easily accessible via my Apple or Google Music subscription.

8. Get moving

This tip will probably be met with a few eyeball rolls, however, being active is a great way to prevent ageing prematurely. Schedule an active hour (or 30min) into your daily routine – a quick walk, taking in the fresh air, is usually all you need. Being active helps with circulation which means that your body can move things around and deposit nutrients in the areas we ned it most, including our skin!

9. Botox

Don’t be so quick to judge! People often associate botox with trashy magazines that like to show us pictures that accompany articles titled “celebrity facelift gone wrong!” and refer to fillers as ‘botox’ (which I will get to). Fillers are not ‘botox’. Botox injects hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring chemical in the body) and relaxing agents into the skin to relax the muscles that are often over-used otherwise causing wrinkles. The product used in the botox treatment is absorbed into the body over a few months and the effect dissipates. If you ask me, there is nothing wrong with relaxing over-worked facial muscles.

10. Fillers

Fillers come into play when the wrinkles are, usually, already present. Trained practitioners can inject areas of the skin to fill out deep lines and wrinkles. If done properly and in moderation, fillers can really give you the look you’re going for and help prevent ageing.
